I Contain Multitudes →
aspergersissues: Someone I don’t know very well mentioned randomly to me a few days ago that I should write an autobiography. Now, I’ve been writing about my life more or less since I’ve had one. but I knew that someday I would actually write the whole damn thing out, I was just not expecting that feeling of “readiness” to come this soon. I turned 30 earlier this year, and I feel like I’ve...

Volunteer Orientation [Autism]
The autism volunteer experience orientation was this morning. I was nervous going into this hour-and-a-half ordeal, given that I had absolutely no idea what it would entail. In the org’s e-mail response to me, they basically said that they’re always in need of volunteers, and to show up. I entered an off-campus university building, walking in with many other girls my age. After I...

Lovely followers
I just wanted to let you all know that I have a dry, dark sense of humor that doesn’t convert well into text format. This will never change, regardless of whether I become a successful SLP or not. If my posts ever strike you as inappropriate, cruel, or otherwise unpalatable, I hope you will give me the benefit of the doubt. In the future, I will mind what I say - especially when it comes...

I’m excited (and nervous)! I will be attending volunteer orientation for my university’s Autism center this Saturday. Not at all sure what this experience would entail. I have no experience with Autism - merely a little book learnin’. I have no experience with children in a professional setting, and hardly any (positive) experience with children in a personal setting. When I...

*Updated* Day 1 - Volunteering [Geriatric]
What an interesting first day! I admit, I did not want to get out of bed this morning. I was a pissypants while I was getting ready. Still, I arrived ten minutes early at 9:20am (hair and makeup done, which - during this time of the year - is unheard of for me), signed in, grabbed my name tag, and hopped on an elevator. I was on my way to the memory care unit of a local geriatric rehabilitation...

I am officially scheduled to volunteer Mondays from 9:30-11:30 at a local nursing home! Specifically, I will be getting patients situated for the socialization and worship hours. I really enjoyed interacting with the residents during my shadowing experience, and hope that this will be a great experience also. :)

ASL
On Day 2 of using my iPad to teach myself ASL. It’s been fun and effective so far. I know the manual alphabet, numbers up to 10, some greetings and introductions, please and thank you, yes and no, asking for/telling age, asking where the restroom is, signs for relatives, asking/telling where one lives, if they drive, if I can have their phone number, if they’re deaf or hearing,...

(Belated Post) Final day of SLP shadowing
I realized I forgot to post about my last day at the local geriatric rehabilitation center! :O How could I! Busy with finals, that’s right..that’s right.. I shadowed from 8:30am-12pm, so a little longer than usual. The SLP and I revisited the woman I wrote about last time, who suffered horrendous cognitive deficits after her stroke. Thankfully, she was much better this time around -...

Looking on to 2012
A few weeks ago, I received my (corrected) graduation audit. Long story short, I only have to take two classes for my minor and a phys ed class in order to graduate May 2012!! I was thinking about double majoring, but I’ve decided not to put any more money into my undergraduate degree. Saving that for post-bach and graduate courses :) I have completed my shadowing experience with a SLP at a...

Speech-Path-Ways: Dear Undergrads, →
speech-path-way: A little advice on the application process…. 1. Graduate school is competitive, especially in the North East/East Coast area. If your GPA is not so stellar, don’t look in that area for a graduate school. Look for schools that will fit you. You want to get a good education. Don’t look at the Top…

Fall 2011
My semester is complete! A few pieces of great news: 1) I passed all of my classes. Normally, this would not be great news phrased in such a way. I strive for A’s, not to just ‘pass’. However, my fiance and I took an over-a-week-long vacation during the semester - one that I totally do not regret - and it was hard to catch up. I figure that my studies can swallow my life whole...

2nd to last day of SLP Shadowing
At first it was “business as usual”. Observing patients who had an accident or condition of some kind, and were a little slow and foggy with word or memory recall - but with decent to good functional communication skills. Such has been every patient thus far.  I informed the SLP whom I shadow that I needed to leave early today, because I had a final exam. I mentioned that I probably...

Day 2/4 SLP Shadowing
Day 2 went well! Saw one of the patients who I had observed on Day 1. Not much progress with him - a reminder that speech therapy can be a long process which requires patience. Was able to observe an evaluation and a screening, which was interesting. After the eval, the SLP that I’m shadowing half-heartedly asked me for my “diagnosis” (which I thought was pretty funny though...

My first day of SLP shadowing went well! Felt like an idiot once or twice but hey…new at this! Was very excited that, when Olivia said we were going to meet with a patient who had a lesion in her right hemisphere from a stroke, I was able to anticipate that she had a lexical retrieval deficit. Looking forward to the remaining 6 hours… the first two went by too fast! :)

Shadowing/Volunteering Opportunity
So, been a little while since I’ve posted! Busy busy with work, school, and life. What’s new? Anyway. I finally set up an orientation at the retirement home rehabilitation center that a friend hooked me up with. Job Shadowing
I mentioned a while ago that a friend hooked me up with an opportunity to shadow an SLP at his workplace - a nursing home. I called the activities coordinator at said nursing home. She asked me how long I wanted to shadow for (I said 4-8 hours…not really interested in a long-term thing until I have some SLP knowledge under my belt). She will be contacting the SLP soon, who will in turn...
