SLP 101

I am an undergrad student, majoring in Linguistics and minoring in Psychology. My goal is to take post-bachelor courses in Speech Language Pathology, then move on to acquiring a Master's in the field. My motivations for beginning this blog are as follows:
-To teach myself more about the field of Speech Language Pathology, and language in general.
-To learn from professionals and others with the same interests.
-To, eventually, share my knowledge with others.
Thank you for following me on this journey.

I mentioned a while ago that a friend hooked me up with an opportunity to shadow an SLP at his workplace - a nursing home.

I called the activities coordinator at said nursing home. She asked me how long I wanted to shadow for (I said 4-8 hours…not really interested in a long-term thing until I have some SLP knowledge under my belt).

She will be contacting the SLP soon, who will in turn contact me to set up a specific day and time.

Yay!

I am excited and nervous… I have never shadowed anyone before. I will arrange for pre- and post-interview sessions via e-mail, so that I’m not asking her a bunch of annoying questions while she’s trying to do her job. Aside from that, shut up and watch/listen? I guess there’s not much else I would be good for as an undergraduate for 4-8 hours on the job, right?

I’m also a little nervous because I’m not entirely sure that the geriatric community is my bag. Seniors can be a lot like children… very sweet and cute, or a hellish nightmare. Aw now that’s not very open minded, is it…(I kid, I kid) and if I’m uncomfortable around kids AND seniors, well! I want to be an SLP, so that simply will not do.

I really, really need to get some volunteer experience in an children’s Autism clinic (my university has one!) or nursing home. It’s pretty sad, actually, how little experience I have with human beings outside of the 18-40 age group…
