SLP 101

I am an undergrad student, majoring in Linguistics and minoring in Psychology. My goal is to take post-bachelor courses in Speech Language Pathology, then move on to acquiring a Master's in the field. My motivations for beginning this blog are as follows:
-To teach myself more about the field of Speech Language Pathology, and language in general.
-To learn from professionals and others with the same interests.
-To, eventually, share my knowledge with others.
Thank you for following me on this journey.

Day 2 went well! Saw one of the patients who I had observed on Day 1. Not much progress with him - a reminder that speech therapy can be a long process which requires patience.

Was able to observe an evaluation and a screening, which was interesting. After the eval, the SLP that I’m shadowing half-heartedly asked me for my “diagnosis” (which I thought was pretty funny though admittedly bolstering- I did tell her I’m a Ling/Psy undergrad, right?). As for the screening, that took about 30 seconds; the patient was an SLP herself who was 100% “with it”.

Anyway, the SLP that I’m shadowing made a comment about how she’s supposed to fill out paperwork after each patient, but pretty much saves it for the end of the day. It seems to be a trend that paperwork is the most tedious/undesired part of the SLP career.

I’m the type of person who is filled with glee when handed a 5 page medical history to fill out, so I wonder if I would enjoy it?
