SLP 101

I am an undergrad student, majoring in Linguistics and minoring in Psychology. My goal is to take post-bachelor courses in Speech Language Pathology, then move on to acquiring a Master's in the field. My motivations for beginning this blog are as follows:
-To teach myself more about the field of Speech Language Pathology, and language in general.
-To learn from professionals and others with the same interests.
-To, eventually, share my knowledge with others.
Thank you for following me on this journey.

A few weeks ago, I received my (corrected) graduation audit. Long story short, I only have to take two classes for my minor and a phys ed class in order to graduate May 2012!! I was thinking about double majoring, but I’ve decided not to put any more money into my undergraduate degree. Saving that for post-bach and graduate courses :)

I have completed my shadowing experience with a SLP at a local geriatric care and rehabilitation center, and it was a great opportunity. Next, I will be contacting my step-grandpa who knows a SLP personally, to see if she *fingers crossed* works in a different field than geriatrics. I’m going to work on shadowing her this semester. If that doesn’t pan out, I will be contacting a local brain trauma clinic to see if I can shadow one of their SLPs.

Because of my shadowing experience, I am already registered as a volunteer at the rehab center. I have e-mailed the volunteer coordinator to set up volunteer hours for the upcoming semester. I have also e-mailed the Autism Collaborative Center on campus to see if they are accepting volunteers.

My goal is to have 3-4 diverse shadowing experiences and 2 solid volunteering experiences before I take my post-bach courses. I’m pretty sure I’ll be graduating with a 3.5 GPA from Eastern, and hope to 4.0 my post-bach courses (a lofty dream, perhaps) and be cozy with the professors. Any advise otherwise with regards to preparing for applying for graduate school is more than welcome!

I’m excited to see what the New Year will bring :)
